Asbestos cement was first developed in 1905 by the Johns-Manville company, which became one of the premier manufacturers of cement-asbestos materials. Siding material and other products using asbestos-reinforced concrete continued to be sold and installed well into the early 1970s since it was believed that the process of making asbestos-cement encapsulated and neutralized the asbestos fibers. Large flat asbestos - cement sheets were available in sizes of twelve - feet long by four - feet wide and thicknesses ranging from approximately an eighth of an inch to one inch. Asbestos-cement flat sheets were, at one time, manufactured only in the typical gray color of cement and usually only accepted for industrial purposes.

Asbestos was used in a number of different materials that were used to create walls, which makes visual identification difficult. Some of the most common types of ACM that were used to create walls include asbestos insulation board (AIB) and cement sheets. AIB’s were used in both commercial and domestic properties to create walls. Over time asbestos sheets may have been replaced with asbestos-free alternatives, but if they are particularly old and look weathered, they are likely to contain asbestos cement.

Asbestos-cement siding is siding made from a mixture of Portland cement reinforced with asbestos fibers. The Portland cement binds asbestos fibers into a hard mass. While asbestos is fireproof and can help limit or stop the spread of fire, the asbestos was actually added to the cement as a binding agent to lend strength to the material. Medium length asbestos fibres and possibly also asbestos shorts or fragments were used in fibre cement products. The fibres, usually chrysotile asbestos (white asbestos), were used to impart strength or resistance to breakage of the asbestos cement product, while shorts or "dust" or fine asbestos particles were used in some products as a filler.
